Wedged between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine and has the archaeology to back it up. Its own alphabet and its own take on hospitality make it hard to mistake for anywhere else.
White with a large red cross reaching all four edges and a smaller red bolnur-katskhuri cross in each quarter - the 'Five Cross Flag'. Georgia adopted it on 14 January 2004, replacing the dark red flag of the 1918 republic that had flown since 1990. The organic law describes the design and assigns the crosses and the colours no meaning at all; the Christian readings attached to them are traditional rather than official.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Georgia floats the lari and has drawn a steady inflow of foreign residents and remote workers in recent years, which shows up in the money moving into the country. It is one of the smaller currencies in this set to trade genuinely freely.

A Georgian account number is twenty-two characters, and the part that identifies the bank is two letters. Across the eighty-nine formats in the register only one other entry uses a two-letter bank identifier. Nine name the bank in two characters of any kind, six of those in digits; the other eighty use three or more. The sixteen characters that follow are all numeric, and the register records that and nothing further about them. The format took effect in May 2010 and the National Bank of Georgia registered it and maintains it.
The machinery underneath that address has been replaced. On 19 May 2026 the National Bank announced it had completed the modernisation of its real-time gross settlement and clearing systems, describing it as the first project of that scale in the country's financial sector since 2009. Every commercial bank took part, along with every microbank and the State Treasury. The new infrastructure is built on ISO 20022 throughout, and the Bank names it as a foundation for an instant payment system and further digital services.
One change in that release affects who can be on the far end of a payment. Following legislative amendment, access to the Bank's payment infrastructure was widened so that non-bank payment service providers may now become participants in the settlement system on meeting the requirements. The Bank describes its own role in three parts and claims all three: regulator of payment systems and providers, operator of the settlement infrastructure, and initiator of changes to it.
