An island nation off Europe's coast whose empire, engines and English once spanned the globe. The UK stitches together England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under one crown.
It's made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Industrial Revolution began here in the 18th century, reshaping how the whole world works.
London's Underground, opened in 1863, was the world's first underground passenger railway.
It has no single written constitution, relying instead on centuries of accumulated law and convention.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field carrying the red cross of St George, the white saltire of St Andrew and the red saltire of St Patrick, the two saltires counterchanged so that the flag has a right way up. The royal proclamation of 1 January 1801 that created it is a blazon: it fixes the tinctures and the geometry and assigns the crosses and the colours no meaning at all. England, Scotland and Ireland are named in that proclamation only against the quarters of the coat of arms, never against a cross, so the familiar reading of the three crosses is conventional rather than official. Wales has no element because it was not a separate kingdom to be united.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The UK corridor moves in both directions - wages and pensions coming to Australia, family support and property payments going the other way - which is why both AUD→GBP and GBP→AUD are heavily checked. The UK’s Faster Payments system clears the domestic leg in seconds, so on this corridor the entire delay is the conversion and compliance step, and a provider quoting “next day” is describing its own processing rather than the rails.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the United Kingdom determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Faster Payments, CHAPS, and what sits outside both
Confirmation of Payee is the check a British bank runs on a payee's name before a transfer goes through, mandated by the Payment Systems Regulator under Specific Direction 17, with the largest providers live from October 2023 and a second group from October 2024. The Regulator reports that it now covers more than 99 per cent of the organisations initiating Faster Payments, running over two million checks a day.
Its scope is written narrowly. The Regulator describes both that check and the reimbursement requirement for authorised push payment fraud as applying to payments made via Faster Payments or CHAPS from one United Kingdom bank account to another. An incoming international payment is neither of those things, so a recipient who has heard that British banks check the name should know the check is absent from the money arriving from Australia.
What the check turns on is the payer: it is run by the payer's own provider at the moment somebody in Britain types the details in, and no such moment exists on a payment already in flight from another country. Sterling coming from overseas reaches the country through a correspondent that is itself a CHAPS participant, the Bank of England noting that thousands of institutions reach CHAPS indirectly through such arrangements.
The details to give a sender are a six-digit sort code and an eight-digit account number, the domestic instruction from which a United Kingdom IBAN is constructed. Pay.UK maintains the register those codes are drawn from on behalf of the industry, and the same register feeds Bacs, Faster Payments and the cheque image system.
How much British pound will I receive in the United Kingdom?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the United Kingdom can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the United Kingdom. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
