The only African nation never formally colonised, birthplace of coffee and home to a calendar that runs several years behind the rest of the world. Ethiopia does time, faith and history its own way.
It's one of the only African countries never to be colonised by a European power.
It follows its own calendar, which runs roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one.
Coffee is widely believed to have originated in its highlands.
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela were carved downward directly out of solid stone.
'Lucy', one of the most famous early human ancestor fossils, was discovered here.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of green, yellow and red with a blue disc bearing a golden star and rays at the centre. Ethiopia is one of the few countries whose law states the meanings outright: the Flag Proclamation assigns green to labour, fertility and development, yellow to hope, justice and equality, and red to sacrifice and heroism towards the prevalence of freedom and equality, while peace belongs to the blue disc, not to any band. The star signifies unity founded on the common will of Ethiopia's nations, nationalities and peoples, and the rays their bright prospect. These are the original Pan-African colours, which Ethiopia inspired.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Ethiopia held the birr at an administered rate well away from what it fetched on the street, then moved to a market-determined rate in 2024, so its recent history splits into two very different regimes. Australia’s Ethiopian community, concentrated in Melbourne, keeps this corridor busier than trade alone would explain.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Ethiopia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The default payout currency, and the account that changes it
Ethiopia settles the payout currency by rule, and the rule has one exception. Foreign Exchange Directive No. FXD/01/2024 provides that the beneficiary is to be paid in birr at the prevailing exchange rate, or credited in foreign exchange in cases where the beneficiary maintains a foreign currency account. The default is the local currency, and the way around it is an account that already exists before the money arrives.
Who may hold such an account is set out in the same directive. Residents may, and so may non-resident Ethiopian individuals and non-resident foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin. Such an account may be credited with foreign currency transferred through international remittance service providers and retained by the beneficiary in foreign currency terms. Accounts are maintained in a handful of named currencies, and a bank may accept a deposit in other convertible currencies including the Australian dollar, converting it to the currency the account is held in.
The last leg is domestic and need not involve a bank at all. The directive allows authorised remittance service representatives other than banks to include the Ethiopian Postal Service, telecommunications companies and payment system operators, requires payment to the beneficiary within twenty-four hours, and defines a pay point as a location such as a bank branch or post office, with every pay point's address filed with the National Bank. The one internationally addressable account number in these rules belongs to the institution and not to the recipient: a representative that is a bank must disclose the identifier codes and international account numbers of its accounts at its correspondent banks, advertising them through brochures, websites and Ethiopian embassies and consulates abroad.
How much Ethiopian birr will I receive in Ethiopia?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Ethiopia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Ethiopia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
