A Red Sea nation whose capital is an open-air museum of Art Deco and Modernist architecture built during Italian rule. Eritrea is where 1930s Italy went to daydream about the future.
A red triangle spanning from the hoist to the fly, dividing a green upper triangle from a blue lower one, with a gold olive wreath and upright branch on the red. Article 4 of the 1997 Constitution assigns the colours no meaning at all, saying only that the flag shall have green, red and blue with golden olive leaves and that the detail shall be set by law. The readings in circulation come from the Ministry of Information: green for agriculture and livestock, blue for the bounty of the Red Sea, red for bloodshed in the struggle, and the olive branches, taken from the 1952 Eritrean flag, for peace. A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Eritrea fixes the nakfa against the US dollar and has held that rate unchanged for many years, so the official figure does not respond to market pressure at all. A traveller may carry only a token amount of nakfa out and anything beyond it is confiscated, formal transfer routes are few, and whether the corridor is served comes before any rate question.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Eritrea handles transfers one at a time, at the top. The United States Department of State's 2024 Investment Climate Statement records that the National Bank of Eritrea must approve and manage all fund transfers into and out of Eritrea, and can arbitrarily decide to disapprove a transfer. The same document records that the country does not currently have any correspondent banking relationships, and that under a 1994 regulation locally based entities are forbidden from maintaining foreign bank accounts.
The domestic sector a payment would land in is small and deliberately bounded. Two banking institutions are named, the Commercial Bank of Eritrea and the Housing and Commercial Bank of Eritrea, and foreign banks are not allowed to open branches or establish operations in the country. There are no automated teller machines in Eritrea and no infrastructure to enable the use of credit or debit cards, so what a recipient can do with a balance is bounded by a counter and its opening hours.
Getting at the money is separately limited. The same statement records that per-person monthly bank withdrawals are capped at five thousand nakfa and that Eritreans are generally unable to withdraw dollars. Most Eritreans do nonetheless hold accounts, because restrictions on the use and hoarding of cash pushed them into the banking system; the statement also records obsolete technology and extended power cuts forcing banks to cease or limit services. Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
