The gift of the Nile, where a thin green ribbon of farmland threads through the desert and 5,000 years of pharaohs, pyramids and hieroglyphs still loom over modern Cairo. Egypt basically invented the tourist landmark.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
The Nile is generally considered the longest river on Earth.
Ancient Egyptians were among the first to develop a form of picture-writing, hieroglyphs, thousands of years ago.
The vast majority of Egyptians live crowded along the banks of the Nile, since most of the country is desert.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of red, white and black with the golden Eagle of Saladin centred on the white. Article 223 of Egypt's constitution describes the flag in almost exactly those terms, naming the three colours and the eagle, and assigns the colours no meaning at all. The readings usually quoted come from Egypt's State Information Service, which gave red as the era of struggle against the British occupation before 1952, white as the arrival of a revolution that ended the monarchy without bloodshed, and black as the end of oppression under both the monarchy and British colonialism. The service's current page gives only the description.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Money sent home by Egyptians working abroad is one of the country’s largest sources of foreign currency, ahead of most of what it exports. The pound has repriced in sharp steps rather than gradual drift, so a figure noted a few months ago says very little about what a transfer produces today.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Egypt determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The Central Bank of Egypt names the parts of the national payment system it supervises: a real-time gross settlement system for large-value payments, a book-entry system for government securities, a cheques clearing house, a national switch for cash machine transactions, and an automated clearing house operated by the Egyptian Banks Company. Its authority over them is statutory, resting on the 2020 law that gives the Bank the power of supervising the national payment system. An arriving payment is credited by a bank inside that structure.
All Egyptian IBANs have a fixed length of twenty-nine characters, made of five components, on the Bank's own published anatomy of the number. The first two are the country code and the next two are check digits. Characters five to eight identify the bank holding the account and characters nine to twelve identify the branch. What is left, and the Bank gives this as a fixed figure, is a customer account number seventeen characters long. The registry SWIFT maintains as registration authority for ISO 13616 records the same structure and names the Central Bank of Egypt as the organisation that registered it.
The seventeen-character account number is the part that catches people out when reading a number aloud or copying one from a message. Two separate four-character blocks precede it, so the account number itself does not begin until the thirteenth character.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Egypt can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Egypt. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
