A small, blisteringly hot country wedged at the mouth of the Red Sea, where the land drops below sea level and salt lakes shimmer like something off another planet. Djibouti trades on its geography and does very well out of it.
Lake Assal sits about 155 metres below sea level, the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth.
Its position at the entrance to the Red Sea makes it one of the world's busiest shipping chokepoints.
The surreal chimneys and steam vents of Lake Abbe look so alien they are often likened to the surface of another planet.
It regularly ranks among the hottest inhabited countries on the planet.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Two horizontal bands, light blue over green, with a white triangle at the hoist bearing a red five-pointed star. Article 2 of the constitution of 15 September 1992 names the flag only as 'le drapeau bleu, vert, blanc frappé d'une étoile rouge à cinq branches' and assigns the colours no meaning; the same article sends the anthem and the seal to legislation but not the flag, and no Djiboutian flag law is published anywhere reachable as of August 2026. Two unofficial readings circulate: blue for the Issa and green for the Afar, and blue for the sea and sky with green for the earth.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Djibouti runs a currency board, with the franc fixed against the US dollar since the 1940s, and the arrangement has outlasted every regional upheaval since. In practice this pair tracks the Australian dollar against the US dollar almost exactly, and the port trade that supports the economy is invoiced in dollars anyway.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Djibouti determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Repayment in francs, in the form the holder chooses
Djibouti's central bank sets out what a holder of electronic money is owed and when. Its instruction on electronic money requires an issuing establishment to identify its customers against a valid identity document before opening an account and to keep a copy of it, and permits a minor to hold one only with a parent's or guardian's authorisation evidenced by a valid official document.
Every transaction has to produce a record naming the person on the other end. The same instruction requires an electronic receipt stating the transaction reference, the nature of the service, the issuer's name, the distributor or sub-distributor registration number, the identity of the sender or the receiver as the case may be, and the time and amount. Repayment is then specified in currency, form and time: a holder may at any time demand repayment of unused units at face value in Djibouti francs, and it is made in francs, in cash, by cheque or by transfer to an account according to the holder's expressed preference, within three working days.
Who may stand at that counter is deliberately wide. The instruction places cash withdrawal and the repayment of electronic money among the functions an issuer may delegate to distributors, and permits distributors to be non-bank financial institutions including post offices and insurance companies. Behind all of it the settlement rail is domestic, and its participants are the central bank and credit institutions licensed as banks; Djibouti's national account format has been in the ISO 13616 registry since April 2022.
How much Djiboutian franc will I receive in Djibouti?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Djibouti can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Djibouti. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
