The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba runs on vintage American cars, hand-rolled cigars and son-cubano rhythms that helped birth salsa.
It's the largest island in the Caribbean by area.
Its capital, Havana, is famous for classic 1950s American cars still cruising the streets.
Cuban music styles like son and rumba are among the roots of modern salsa.
It's known worldwide for hand-rolled cigars made from its tobacco.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three blue and two white horizontal stripes with a red equilateral triangle at the hoist bearing a single white five-pointed star. The law of national symbols gives the blue stripes the high aspirations of the country's patriots and the island's colonial-era administrative divisions, the white stripes the purity of its ideals and the virtue of Cubans, the triangle the historical ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, the red inside it the blood shed in the struggle, and the lone star a free, independent and sovereign republic together with the unity of Cubans.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Cuba withdrew its second, convertible currency in 2021, leaving the peso as the only official one, but more than one exchange rate has operated alongside it since. Family support generally arrives through specific authorised channels rather than an ordinary bank transfer, and what is credited can differ from any mid-market figure.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Cuba determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The two exits from a Cuban foreign-currency account
Cuban banking rules make one distinction that decides what a recipient actually ends up holding. Under the central bank's rules for accounts denominated in foreign currency, household accounts may receive bank transfers from abroad. Taking that money out again is where the two exits diverge. Cash withdrawals in the foreign currency are permitted according to the availability and commercial policy of the banks, a condition written into the rule itself; cash withdrawals in national currency at the applicable official rate carry no such condition. The credit may be in foreign currency while only the national-currency withdrawal is unconditional, and the chapter places these among the accounts of natural persons associated with a magnetic card.
Those rules are recent. They took effect in December 2025 and replaced instruments from 2020 and 2021. They arrived alongside a decree-law on transactions in foreign currency in the national economy, which states its own objective as lasting until conditions allow the Cuban peso to be resumed as the country's only legal tender. How money gets into the country in the first place is licensed one firm at a time. There is no single institution: the Banco Central de Cuba authorises each foreign money-transmission business by its own resolution, published in the official gazette with its own identifier, and it withdraws authorisations the same way, by published resolution.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Cuba can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Cuba. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
