A small slice of Central America between two oceans, Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and now runs on rainforest, volcanoes and famously abundant wildlife.
Five horizontal bands - blue, white, a double-width red centre, white and blue. The governing law assigns the blue the sky, the white peace and the red the blood of those who fell for liberty; a longer official reading of energy, courage and warmth circulates alongside it. A separate state flag, reserved for the supreme powers and diplomatic posts, carries the coat of arms on a white oval in the red band.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
The colón is managed rather than fixed, with the central bank letting it move and intervening at the edges, so it has had long stretches of drift in both directions. Tourism and foreign investment bring in enough hard currency that the colón has at times been firmer than visitors expected.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Costa Rica's mobile payment service has a restriction written into its design, and the central bank states it plainly: telephone numbers can only be linked to accounts in colones. That single sentence decides what the service can carry. A customer registers through their own financial institution, must hold an active colón account and an active mobile line, and the service is available twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. The currency restriction is on the account the number is linked to, not on the number itself.
The system underneath is broader than its mobile front end. The Banco Central de Costa Rica developed and manages the national electronic payment system, connecting financial entities and public institutions across the country over a private network and letting them transfer funds between IBAN accounts. Costa Rica has an IBAN, registered with effect from June 2011: twenty-two characters, made up of the country code, two check digits, a four-digit bank code, a two-digit branch code and a twelve-digit account number. It is the identifier the Bank's system moves funds between, and the Bank states the format complies with ISO 13616. The automatic debiting authorisation service on the same platform operates in colones or dollars.
Somebody with no banking history has a documented way in. The simplified record account can be opened at any agency, office or correspondent bank by a low-risk customer, on production of the national identity card, the residency card, a diplomatic identity card, a minor's card or a passport, with a monthly deposit ceiling and one account permitted per person for each currency type. The residency card matters for a foreign national living there, because it is named in the list. The regional system operated by the central banks of Central America and the Dominican Republic moves funds between those countries in United States dollars.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Costa Rica. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
