A ribbon of a country over 4,000 kilometres long but rarely more than 200 wide, Chile runs from the driest non-polar desert on Earth down toward the icy edge of Antarctica.
It's one of the longest and narrowest countries in the world, spanning a huge range of climates.
Its Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert on Earth, with places that may have never recorded rainfall.
It governs Easter Island, home to the famous moai stone statues, thousands of kilometres out in the Pacific.
The clear Atacama skies host some of the world's most powerful astronomical observatories.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Two horizontal bands, white over red, with a blue square in the upper hoist bearing a single white five-pointed star. By popular tradition white recalls the snow of the Andes, blue the sky and red the blood shed for independence, though no Chilean statute assigns the colours or the star any meaning.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Chilean prices are quoted in whole pesos with no working subdivision, and a single Australian dollar buys several hundred of them, so ordinary sums look larger than they are. Copper earnings dominate Chile’s exports, and the peso has historically followed the metal’s price cycles closely.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Chile determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The account whose number is the holder's ID number
One Chilean account solves the problem of giving somebody your details by not having a separate number at all. For CuentaRUT, the mass-market account any Chilean or foreign national holding a valid identity card may open, the government's own public-services guidance states that the account number is the holder's national identity number with the verifier digit removed. There is no income test and no commercial history requirement, and the account is available from age twelve with a legal representative below eighteen. A recipient asked for their account details is therefore reading off the card in their wallet.
Immediacy in Chile is a duty on each bank. The financial market regulator requires banks to arrange that a transfer ordered through an electronic channel is executed immediately where funds are available. The debit, the credit and the making available to the beneficiary must be simultaneous, on the day the transfer is ordered, and the duty applies equally whether the money stays inside one bank or crosses to another. The daily obligations arising between banks from those transfers are resolved in a low-value clearing house, which is where the regulator's chapter on electronic funds transfer places them.
What a transfer from abroad has to carry is set out with an asymmetry worth noticing. For any electronic transfer of a thousand United States dollars or more, cross-border and domestic alike, the anti-money-laundering rules require the sender's name, domicile, account number where one is used, and their national identity number, or a passport for a non-resident foreigner. For the recipient they require only the name and the account number where one is used. So the paperwork burden sits on the sending side.
An institution receiving a transfer without that mandatory information must set it aside and then, on its own risk assessment, settle it, reject it, cancel it or suspend it. Collecting in person calls for an identity document or passport, and full customer checks are triggered at three thousand United States dollars for an occasional transaction. Chile does not appear in the ISO 13616 registry, so there is no IBAN.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Chile can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Chile. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
