The second-largest country on Earth by area, Canada has more lakes than any other country and a coastline so long you could never walk all of it.

  • It has the longest coastline of any country, stretching over 200,000 kilometres.
  • It shares the world's longest international border with the United States, running nearly 9,000 kilometres.
  • It has two official languages, English and French, at the federal level.
  • The name 'Canada' comes from the Iroquoian word 'kanata', meaning village or settlement.
  • It contains roughly a fifth of the world's fresh water.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Two red vertical bands at the hoist and fly with a white central square holding a single red 11-pointed maple leaf. The maple leaf has stood for Canada since the 19th century; red and white are its colours by long use, not by law. The leaf lost two points, from 13 to 11, to read clearly at a distance and in wind.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Working-holiday flows make this a two-way corridor. The AUD and CAD are both commodity currencies and often move together, so the cross rate can sit still while both move against the US dollar. Canada and Australia both run their own instant domestic rails but nothing connects them directly, so every transfer between them still crosses through a correspondent bank, and that hop is where the time and the hidden margin go.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Canada determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/CAD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Hold periods and their boundary

Canada caps how long a bank may hold a deposit before the money becomes available, and the cap has a boundary written into it. The Access to Funds Regulations set maximum hold periods and require the first hundred dollars to be made available immediately, but their application provision reaches only items drawn on an institution's branch located in Canada and issued in Canadian dollars. Anything arriving in another currency, or drawn abroad, sits outside that ceiling.

The alias a Canadian uses every day is closed to a sender overseas. Interac describes its e-Transfer service, addressed to an email address or a mobile number, as a way to send money to anyone in Canada. Nor is there yet an instant retail rail underneath it. Payments Canada, which is building one, describes its Real-Time Rail as in industry solution assurance testing with its by-laws and rules approved and launch planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, and that date is the operator's own plan rather than a service anybody can use today.

What arrives from overseas therefore comes through Lynx, the high-value system that completed its move to the ISO 20022 message standard in November 2025, or through the Automated Clearing Settlement System, the retail batch system carrying most of the daily volume and settling the following business morning. The addressing details are an institution number, a branch transit number and the account number, drawn from the Financial Institutions File that Payments Canada refreshes weekly.

Reporting is somebody else's job. The Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada requires the final receipt of an international electronic funds transfer of ten thousand dollars or more to be reported by the financial entity or money services business handling it, with a twenty-four hour rule aggregating linked transfers. The duty sits on the institution; the person receiving the money files nothing.

Common questions

How much Canadian dollar will I receive in Canada?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Canada can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Canada. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
