A Himalayan kingdom that measures success in Gross National Happiness and keeps its forests thick by law. Bhutan only opened to television and the internet in 1999.
Divided diagonally from the lower hoist to the upper fly, yellow above and orange below, with a white dragon lying along the division and gripping jewels in its claws. The constitutional schedule that defines the flag gives the yellow the secular tradition, personified by the King as upholder of both the spiritual and secular foundations of the kingdom, and the orange the spiritual tradition and the flourishing of the Kagyu and Nyingma schools. The dragon carries the name of the kingdom, Druk; its whiteness stands for the undefiled thoughts of a people of different ethnic and linguistic origins. No state text says what the jewels mean.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
The ngultrum is held at par with the Indian rupee and rupees circulate in Bhutan alongside it, so an AUD→BTN quote and an AUD→INR quote should sit on top of each other. Where they diverge, the difference is the provider’s, not the market’s.

A transfer into Bhutan arrives on the messaging network. The Royal Monetary Authority joined SWIFT, the interbank messaging cooperative, in 2005, has since adopted the ISO 20022 messaging standard on it, and names six Bhutanese institutions as members. That is the route an ordinary international transfer takes.
The infrastructure Bhutan is better known for runs the other way and carries something else. Its financial switch was joined to India's on 17 August 2019, making the country the second to accept that scheme's cards; a second phase in 2020 let Bhutanese-issued cards work in India, and a third brought acceptance of India's mobile payment codes from March 2021. The Authority describes that last phase as serving Indian travellers making merchant payments in Bhutan. Two Bhutanese institutions also run an international payment gateway in US dollars and Indian rupees, and the Authority defines a gateway as the thing that lets businesses accept payments from customers, sitting between a merchant and the banks. All of it is acceptance infrastructure. None of it is a way to send somebody money.
What the money lands on once it is inside the country is recent and is the Authority's own. It replaced the older electronic funds transfer and clearing arrangement in July 2019 with a platform it calls the Global Interchange for Financial Transaction, and in March 2020 launched an interoperable national QR standard on common infrastructure it runs, with every commercial bank deployed on it. The Authority had opened its first clearing house in Thimphu in 1997 and a second at Phuentsholing in 2000, so the institutions underneath are older than the platforms.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
