An archipelago of hundreds of islands and cays scattered across turquoise shallows, The Bahamas sits just off Florida and made its name on clear water, coral and pink-sand beaches.

  • It is made up of around 700 islands and cays, though only a few dozen are inhabited.
  • Columbus made his first landfall in the Americas here in 1492.
  • Its Dean's Blue Hole is one of the deepest known underwater sinkholes in the world.
  • The Exumas are famous for their beach-dwelling swimming pigs.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of aquamarine, gold and aquamarine with a black triangle at the hoist. The constitution has no flag provision. The Flags and Coat of Arms (Regulation) Act describes the flag in one line of heraldry, as azure with a gold fess and a black pile issuing from the hoist, and assigns no part of it any meaning. The government's own account reads the gold for the land and the aquamarine for the sea, together the resources the Bahamian people mean to develop and process, and the black for the vigour and force of a united people, with the triangle itself standing for that enterprise and determination.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

US and Bahamian dollars circulate side by side at par, and shops take either without converting, so a recipient holding a local account effectively holds something interchangeable with US dollars. That parity has stood for decades, which makes it one of the steadier destinations in the region.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the Bahamas determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BSD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Where a payment from abroad can actually land

The Bahamian central bank digital currency is walled off at the border. The scheme's own published description states that the Bahamian digital currency is for domestic use only and is prohibited from acceptance by non-domestic payees. A wallet holder may still link a bank account through an authorised financial institution and use that account internationally, but a non-domestic payee is prohibited from accepting the digital currency itself.

The Central Bank of The Bahamas separately operates the Bahamas Interbank Settlement System, its real-time gross settlement system, in service since 2004, and put a new version live on 10 June 2025, compliant with the ISO 20022 messaging standard in support of the international messaging deadline that November. The retail clearing house alongside it is not the Central Bank's: it is owned by the clearing banks, began operating in January 2010, and clears Bahamian dollar cheques between them. The Central Bank's request for proposals for a fast payment system, issued in October 2025, sets the same domestic scope on paper: it seeks real-time payments in The Bahamas, interoperating with the clearing house, the settlement system and the digital currency, and draws its participants from institutions operating in the domestic payments space. Nor is there an international account number in the picture: the Bahamas has no ISO 13616 registry entry.

Once the money is in an account a second rule reaches it. The exchange control regulations define foreign currency to include any right to receive foreign currency in respect of a credit or balance at a bank. Every person in The Bahamas entitled to sell such currency, who is not an authorised dealer, must offer it for sale to one unless the Controller consents to their retaining it. The same regulations put the burden of proof on the holder: in proceedings for failing to comply it is presumed, until the contrary is shown, that the currency was not offered for sale to an authorised dealer.

Common questions

How much Bahamian dollar will I receive in the Bahamas?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the Bahamas can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the Bahamas. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
