South America's giant, home to most of the Amazon and a football obsession to match its size. Brazil is the only country the equator and a tropic both cross, and it speaks Portuguese while its neighbours speak Spanish.
It holds the record for the most FIFA World Cup wins, with five titles.
The Amazon rainforest, mostly within Brazil, is the largest tropical rainforest on Earth.
It's the largest country in both South America and the entire Southern Hemisphere.
The Amazon River carries more water than the next several largest rivers combined.
Its capital, Brasília, was purpose-built from scratch in the late 1950s in the shape of an aeroplane.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A green field with a large yellow diamond enclosing a blue celestial globe crossed by a white band reading 'Ordem e Progresso' ('Order and Progress'). The 27 white stars represent the states and federal district, set out as the sky over Rio de Janeiro at 8.30 on the morning of 15 November 1889, seen from outside the celestial sphere.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Students and working-holiday travellers move in both directions here, so money flows out of Australia and back again rather than in one direction only. The real is among the most actively traded currencies in Latin America, and Brazil’s domestic instant-payment system means the final leg can land quickly once funds are inside the country.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Brazil determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Brazil is not in Europe and does not need an IBAN for regional reasons, and it built one anyway. Banco Central do Brasil set out the implementation guidelines in a circular of February 2013 specifying a 29-character format: the country code, two check digits, an eight-digit identifier for the financial institution, five digits of branch, ten digits of account, then two more characters. The circular also fixed a date on the receiving side, requiring Brazilian financial institutions to accept the IBAN as a valid account identification code for funds coming from abroad from July 2013.
One of the two characters at the end is alphabetic and carries the type of account. The other is alphanumeric and carries the account holder's order, which is to say which of the holders of a shared account this is. Most national formats stop at identifying the account; Brazil's identifies a position within it, and that detail is inside the string a recipient reads out to whoever is paying them.
The instant system Brazil is better known for is not the way in. The central bank's own account of it describes keys registered against a Brazilian tax registration number, individual or corporate, and settling domestically. A payment sent from outside Brazil reaches an account there through correspondent banking first, and the key comes into its own once the money is already there.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Brazil can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Brazil. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
