A high-altitude South American country with two capitals and a mirror-flat salt desert you can see from space. Bolivia keeps its government in La Paz but its constitution in Sucre.

  • The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, turning into a giant mirror after rain.
  • La Paz is the highest administrative capital on Earth, sitting over 3,600 metres above sea level.
  • Lake Titicaca, which it shares with Peru, is the highest navigable lake in the world.
  • Bolivia has two capitals: Sucre is constitutional, while La Paz holds the government.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of red, yellow and green. The 2009 constitution names the tricolour a symbol of the State but assigns the colours no meaning; a supreme decree of the same year supplies one, giving red the blood shed by the nation's heroes for the birth and preservation of the Republic and the consolidation of the Plurinational State, yellow the mineral and subsoil riches of the Bolivian people, and green the wealth of nature and hope. The coat of arms sits at the centre of the yellow band only on the flags of state institutions and the armed forces, not on the plain tricolour that citizens fly. Bolivia has a second official flag: the same constitutional article also names the wiphala, a square seven-by-seven chequered banner of forty-nine coloured squares, and it is hoisted beside the tricolour on central-government buildings.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Bolivia held the boliviano at an effectively unchanged official rate against the US dollar from 2011 until 2026, when it moved to a flexible exchange market, so this pair now moves on both sides rather than tracking the Australian dollar alone. Hard currency has been scarce inside the country, which affects what a recipient can do with the money more than the quote does.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Bolivia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BOB converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

What the payout counter writes down about you

Bolivia's rules are specific about which parts of an identity card a payout counter has to copy down. The financial intelligence unit's rulebook for remittance companies requires them to establish who the beneficiary is from a photocopy of the identity card, and to record not merely its number but its extensión. Alongside that go the person's names and surnames, date of birth, nationality, marital status, home address, occupation, principal economic activity and place of work, with further information added where the risk assessment calls for it. A foreigner collecting supplies instead a photocopy of a valid passport or a foreigner's identity card.

The same article requires a record of the money, and one of its fields is the part a sender rarely thinks about - the currency. For a natural person sending from outside the country, the company keeps the sender's full name, the economic beneficiary, the country the funds came from, the amount, the date, and the type of currency the operation was in.

Paying remittances out is supervised as its own licensed category of business, with financial statements published for each firm by the financial system supervisor. The Banco Central de Bolivia runs the integrated payment settlement system behind the banks, with a high-value module and a deferred low-value one, and the clearing houses feeding it handle cheques and electronic funds transfer orders.

Common questions

How much Boliviano will I receive in Bolivia?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Bolivia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Bolivia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
