A tiny, oil-rich sultanate on the island of Borneo, wrapped in rainforest and ruled by one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs. Brunei is split into two chunks by a slice of Malaysia.

  • It sits on the island of Borneo, which it shares with Malaysia and Indonesia.
  • Much of the country is still covered in old-growth tropical rainforest.
  • Kampong Ayer, its historic water village, is a sprawling settlement built on stilts over the river.
  • Its ruler is one of the longest-serving current monarchs in the world.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A yellow field crossed by white and black diagonal stripes with a red state crest in the centre. Yellow is the sultan's colour, white and black those of the Pengiran Bendahara and Pengiran Pemancha. The crest gathers a royal parasol, a wing, upraised hands and a crescent for Islam carrying the motto 'Always render service by God's guidance', over a scroll reading 'Brunei Darussalam'.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The Brunei dollar is held at par with the Singapore dollar and the two are interchangeable in both countries, so an AUD→BND rate should shadow AUD→SGD. Where a provider quotes them differently, that gap is a margin rather than a market movement.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Brunei determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BND converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The settlement layer underneath a Brunei payment

Brunei's central bank runs the country's national payment and settlement systems, and there are three of them with three separate start dates. Real-time gross settlement was introduced on 7 November 2014, the automated clearing house followed on 26 May 2016, and the central securities depository on 12 May 2017. Interbank transfers are settled out of funds the banks hold at the central bank, and once settled they are final and irrevocable.

The two that matter to an ordinary payment work differently from each other. Gross settlement moves a large or urgent payment on its own, immediately, from one bank to another. The clearing house takes high volumes, groups them into batches, processes each batch at set intervals through the day and then settles the result in the gross settlement system.

More recently the central bank standardised the counter. Its notice on the adoption of a national code standard, issued in 2025 under section 54 of the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank Order, applies to banks, to the country's Islamic trust fund corporation and to operators of payment systems approved to operate in Brunei, and took immediate effect. What a sender still needs is the older kind of detail: Brunei is not among the ISO 13616 national formats in the IBAN registry at its current release, 102 of June 2026, so a sender is asked for the bank's identifier code and the account number and there is no IBAN to give.

Common questions

How much Brunei dollar will I receive in Brunei?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Brunei can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Brunei. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
