A small, green and mountainous country in the African Great Lakes, Burundi is one of the most densely populated nations on the continent.

  • It borders Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and oldest freshwater lakes in the world.
  • A spot in Burundi is considered one of the southernmost sources of the Nile.
  • UNESCO inscribed Burundi's 'Ritual dance of the royal drum' on its intangible cultural heritage list in 2014.
  • It's one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in mainland Africa.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A white saltire divides the field into red panels top and bottom and green ones at the sides, with a white disc in the centre bearing three green-edged red six-pointed stars. The constitution gives the colours and the stars no meaning; the stars are commonly read as the motto 'Unity, Work, Progress' or as the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo each use a currency called the franc, and no one of the three is interchangeable with the others, so the ISO code carries more information than the name does. Burundian amounts also run into the thousands for even a small Australian transfer.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Burundi determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BIF converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

An account number the world recognises, and a post office that counts as a participant

A Burundian account number is addressable from anywhere, even though what it settles on afterwards is required to be Burundian. The country's national account format was entered in the ISO 13616 registry with effect from October 2021, so the number a recipient gives a sender is one the rest of the world recognises. Loi n° 1/07 of 11 May 2018 then provides that no entity may set up or manage a system, or issue means of payment, in Burundi without a licence from the central bank, and that a licensed system must be established and operated by a company having its registered office in Burundi, with its rules governed by Burundian law.

Who may be at the paying end is set out in the same law. The eligible participants it names include the central bank, a foreign central bank, local and foreign banks, financial institutions, microfinance institutions and the national postal authority. A post office counter is therefore a participant in its own right, not an informal alternative to one, which is worth knowing where bank branches are scarce.

One definition decides how far the protections reach. The law's list of means of payment covers cheques, bills of exchange, promissory notes, electronic money held on a card or a server, credit transfers, direct debits and cards, and expressly excludes banknotes and coins. A cash handover sits outside the licensed-instrument regime rather than at the bottom of it, so the rules that govern how a payment must be handled stop at the point where notes change hands.

Common questions

How much Burundian franc will I receive in Burundi?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Burundi can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Burundi. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
