A small archipelago in the Persian Gulf whose name means 'two seas'. Bahrain was pearling in these warm waters long before oil ever entered the picture.

  • Its name means 'two seas' in Arabic.
  • It was one of the first places in the Persian Gulf to discover oil, back in 1932.
  • The Tree of Life, a lone mesquite tree, has survived for centuries in the middle of its desert.
  • The King Fahd Causeway connects the island nation to Saudi Arabia by road across the Gulf.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A white band at the hoist and a red field, divided by a serrated line of five white triangles. Decree-Law No. 4 of 2002 gives the white a quarter of the flag's length and says the five sections represent the five pillars of Islam; it assigns the two colours themselves no meaning. White beside red goes back to the General Treaty of 1820, which Bahrain's rulers signed.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Like its Kuwaiti neighbour the Bahraini dinar is worth more than one Australian dollar and subdivides into 1000 fils. Bahrain is pegged to the US dollar and functions as a regional banking base, so the corridor is generally well served by formal channels.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Bahrain determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BHD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Fawri, Fawri+, and the session added for holidays

The last leg of an arriving payment in Bahrain is carried by one of two services, and which one decides how long the money takes. The Central Bank of Bahrain has authorised the BENEFIT Company to operate the Electronic Fund Transfer System, and describes the two in the same breath but not in the same terms. Fawri+ moves a transfer within thirty seconds, around the clock, every day of the year. Fawri moves one in a matter of hours, and the Bank's wording draws the boundary: during official working days.

That distinction used to have a consequence on the calendar. The Bank's real-time gross settlement system, through which interbank payments settle, is open from eight in the morning until twenty-five past three every business day, so a public holiday closed the door behind the slower service. From Friday 3 October 2025 it stopped doing so: the Bank began running settlement through public holidays as well, with a dedicated morning session for Fawri transactions processed by the BENEFIT Company. In its own account, customers can now send and receive larger Fawri transactions during public holidays, and retail banks credit them while the country is closed.

An arriving worker may already hold the number the money needs, handed over before they leave the airport. The Labour Market Regulatory Authority states that it issues an international account number to every incoming expatriate employee arriving at Bahrain International Airport, covering all who enter the Kingdom that way from August 2024. Its stated purpose is wages: it urges employers to pay them electronically through accredited bank accounts, for the sake of documented records protecting both sides. It urges; it does not require.

Common questions

How much Bahraini dinar will I receive in Bahrain?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Bahrain can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Bahrain. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
