The easternmost island in the Caribbean, standing alone out in the Atlantic. Barbados is the birthplace of rum and the pop superstar Rihanna.

  • It's widely credited as the birthplace of rum, distilled here since the 17th century.
  • The global pop star Rihanna was born and raised on the island.
  • It lies further east than the rest of the Caribbean, out on its own in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Its capital, Bridgetown, and its historic garrison are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three vertical bands of ultramarine, gold and ultramarine with a black trident head in the centre. Blue is the sea and sky, gold the sand; the trident is broken from its shaft to symbolise Barbados's clean break from its colonial past.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Barbados earns most of its foreign currency from tourism, and its dollar has been fixed against the US dollar since the mid-1970s, so what a sender sees from here is really the Australian dollar’s own move against the US one. Visitors are routinely quoted in either currency and given change in local notes.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Barbados determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/BBD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The switchover weekend, and what the new scheme covers

Barbados changed its domestic payment plumbing over a single weekend. The Central Bank of Barbados switched off the automated clearing house at two in the afternoon on Friday 12 June 2026 and the real-time processing system at seven that evening, and interbank transfers resumed on the new BiMPay platform at one o'clock the following morning. On the Bank's own answers to public questions about it, cross-border payments were planned for the future and not available at launch.

What the new scheme is addressed by shows the same scope. A payment on it goes to a simple identifier, which may be a phone number, an email address, a national identity number, a store number or a utility identifier, and the Bank describes the service as reaching anyone, anywhere in Barbados; no bank account is required, because a digital wallet is enough. The identifiers BiMPay uses are domestic ones, and Barbados has no entry in the ISO 13616 registry to offer alongside them. And once the money is there, converting it is a job for an authorised dealer: on the Central Bank's plain-language guidance, a person or company who is not one may accept foreign currency in exchange for goods and services but may not dispose of it except through a dealer.

Common questions

How much Barbadian dollar will I receive in Barbados?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Barbados can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Barbados. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
