Angola’s foreign-exchange market has been tightly managed for most of its modern history, and access to hard currency inside the country was rationed for years before the kwanza was allowed to move more freely. Oil earnings dominate the supply of foreign currency, so this corridor answers to the oil market as much as to anything Australian.

In Angola the tax number and the identity card number are one and the same. Presidential Decree 245/21, the legal regime for the tax identification number, provides that the number of national citizens corresponds to their identity card number, that registration and obtaining one is obligatory, and that for foreign citizens, whether resident or not, it is a sequential number allocated by the tax administration.
The consequences for an account are direct and stated. The same decree prohibits opening a bank account without an active tax number, makes quoting it mandatory both on opening an account and in all transactions or operations carried out with any financial institution, and provides that income subject to withholding cannot be paid or made available without mention of the beneficiary's number. It is not a supplementary detail; it is the thing the account is keyed to.
The account itself has an international form, made locally. A 2015 notice of the Banco Nacional de Angola sets the national bank number as twenty-one digits in four blocks, a four-digit institution identifier, four digits at the institution's discretion, an eleven-digit account number and two check digits computed under a standard algorithm, and defines the international form as that number prefixed by the country code and two further check digits, twenty-five characters in all. Angola does not appear in the ISO 13616 registry, so this is a format its own central bank created and governs rather than one registered internationally.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
