A mountainous Balkan country on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts where locals nod their heads to say no and shake them to say yes. Albania keeps you guessing.

  • Its people call their country Shqipëria, often translated as the 'Land of the Eagles'.
  • Mother Teresa, one of the most famous humanitarians of the 20th century, was of Albanian heritage.
  • It's dotted with hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers built during its mid-20th-century isolation.
  • The Albanian language forms its own unique branch of the Indo-European family, related to no other living tongue.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field, called blood-red by the 2002 flag law, charged with a black double-headed eagle with open wings, nine feathers to each wing and seven to the tail. Neither the constitution nor that law assigns the colour or the eagle a meaning. The eagle was a device of several medieval Albanian noble houses before Skanderbeg carried it in the 15th century, and whether Shqipëria takes its name from the word for eagle is unsettled.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The lek floats, unusually for the Western Balkans, and inward transfers from Albanians working abroad are a meaningful part of the economy. Amounts run to double or triple digits of lek per Australian dollar.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Albania determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/ALL converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Two national targets with opposite fates

Albania set a number for how often each person should pay electronically, then beat it. The National Retail Payments Strategy approved in June 2018 carried two measurable objectives: lift cashless payments per head from 4.3 to 10, and lift the share of adults holding an account from 40 per cent to 70 per cent by 2022. By 2023 the first had reached 21 payments a head, more than double what was asked.

Account ownership never reached its own target. The World Bank's measure of account ownership puts Albanian adults at 40.02 per cent in 2017, 44.17 in 2021 and 46.07 in 2024, short of a target set for 2022 and short of it still. A country can double how often its people pay electronically while more than half of them remain outside a bank. For somebody expecting money from another country, that second figure is the one deciding whether there is an account for it to land in.

The clearing those accounts settle through is older than either target. The Bank of Albania has provided a clearing service since 1997, and the automated electronic clearing house that handles retail payments of up to ten million lek has been live since 8 July 2005, running three sessions a day with twelve commercial banks participating directly and the Ministry of Finance indirectly.

Albania reached the European schemes ahead of its neighbours, and then waited. It entered the single euro payments area on 21 November 2024, and the first transaction was not made for another ten and a half months: the ceremony came on 7 October 2025, with the Governor saying that eleven commercial banks operating in Albania were by then ready to provide the services.

Common questions

How much Albanian lek will I receive in Albania?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Albania can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Albania. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
